The act or process of inventing new words, expressions, or giving an established word a new or different meaning. It also refers to the study or introduction of these new terms into a language. The word comes from the Greek neo (“new”) and logos (“word” or “study”), modeled on French (néologie) and first recorded in English in the late 1700s.

While neology is the act or practice of creating new terms, a neologism is the actual new word or phrase itself.
It can also refer to a newly coined, idiosyncratic word created by someone often with disordered thinking) that has meaning only to the speaker.
